Course Description

This course is designed to provide students with communicative skills essential for their personal and professional growth at the workplace. Students are exposed to various communicative activities that enable them to acquire meaningful and experiential learning opportunities. to analyse verbal and non-verbal messages and the role of personal and interpersonal communication.

Participants are guided and assisted through strategic processes of developing effective communicative skills, from the preparatory right up to the final stage of presentation. Emphasis is placed on the production of both verbal and non-verbal communication activities pertinent to effective communication.


Course Objectives

At the end of the course, participants should be able to:

1. communicate effectively using correct and appropriate language structure.
2. express confidently when communicating to each other.
3. use appropriate non-verbal communication when speaking to others.
4. communicate effectively using appropriate phrasal verbs and/or idiomatic expressions


Course Content

1. Understanding basic Grammar:

• Sentences - Definition, Types, Structures and Patterns
• Parts of Speech - Nouns, Pronouns, Verbs, Adverbs, Adjectives, Prepositions, Conjunctions, Interjections, Articles (Determiners)
• Active Tenses - Simple Present, Simple Past, Simple Future

 

2. Pronunciation and Intonation
  • Common pronunciation challenges - ptkbdd, f & v, 'th' sound, 'r' sound
  • Vocalized pauses
  • Intonation patterns and stresses
3. Phrasal Verbs & Idiomatic Expressions
  • Understanding different Phrasal Verbs & Idiomatic Expressions
  • Applying various Phrasal Verbs & Idiomatic Expressions in daily communications
3. Hands-on activities on developing communicative skills
  • Dialogs and small talks
  • Workplace communications - telephone conversations, front-desk inquiries, group discussions
  • Other oral activities - news reading or reporting, short presentation, other impromptu oral activities

On-going Assessments - Students' Presentations and Oral Activities 80%
