Course DescriptionThis is a course for students to develop the strategies and skills necessary to make effective oral presentations. Guidance is provided from the preparatory right up to the final stage of delivery. Emphasis is placed on the importance of verbal and non-verbal communication skills and using visual aids appropriately in oral presentations. Students will also be taught to anticipate and deal with questions and comments orally during a question and answer session.
Course ObjectivesAt the end of the course, participants should be able to:
1. understand the principles involved in the preparation and delivery of effective speeches and oral presentations.
2. express themselves confidently when speaking to an audience.
3. use appropriate non-verbal communication when giving speeches and oral presentations.
4. anticipate and deal with questions and comments from the audience.
Course Content1. Steps involved in a presentation:
• Understanding basic principles of speech communication• Researching topic and collecting materials for informative speeches (relevance, depth)• Determining presentation aims and structure (purpose, audience, time management)• Preparing the presentation (using accurate and appropriate language, writing preparation outline)• Determining and designing visual aids (suitability, usefulness, interaction with visual aids)• Presenting the speech (pronunciation/enunciation, fluency, accuracy, articulation, intonation, stress, non-verbal aspects of delivery)
2. Dealing with questions and comments from the audienceOn-going Oral Activities and AssessmentsPresentation 1 (20%)
• Individual Presentation
o Introduction (2-3 minutes)
o ImpromptuPresentation 2 (30%)

o Presenting one main point from central idea using powerpoint slides (3-5 minutes)Presentation 3 (40%)
